“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1
The class started with the definition and did not rush past it. Faith is trusting God when the circumstances argue against Him. Not when they cooperate — that requires nothing.
When faith costs something
The group named the situations that ask the most of it: sickness, money running short, trouble inside the family, and the decisions big enough that you cannot see past them. Those are the places where faith stops being a word.
How faith grows
Two ways, and both are ordinary. The first is time in the Word, made a daily habit rather than an emergency measure. The second is memory — looking back at where God has already come through, and letting that count as evidence.
An image that stuck: you cannot see the wind. You can see everything it is doing. God works the same way, and mostly out of sight.
What gets in the way
The class was blunt about the obstacles to trusting God completely:
- Doubt
- Fear
- Impatience
- Pride
- Leaning on your own understanding
The picture offered was a jigsaw puzzle. We try to solve the thing holding a handful of pieces and no box lid. God has all of them. That is the whole argument for trusting Him with the part you cannot make sense of.
Why it matters
Hebrews 11:6 — without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith lets you see the promise before the eye can. And a delayed prayer is not a denied one, which was said plainly and from experience.
The charge at the end was to each other, not just to God: tell the testimonies, pray together, and remind one another what was promised. Feed the faith and the doubt gets smaller.
