“Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel.” — Hosea 3:1
One of the hardest assignments God ever gave a preacher. Hosea’s wife had left him for other men, and God tells him to go and love her again — and then to go and buy her back, at cost, out of what she had sold herself into.
The prophet’s marriage was the sermon. Israel had done to God exactly what Gomer did to Hosea, and God’s answer was not to write them off. It was to go get them.
The message stayed on that point: God’s love is not conditioned on our performance. It is not a reward for being faithful, which is a mercy, because we have not been. He keeps calling people back, and He was willing to pay the price Himself to make the way back open.
So the word to anybody who has drifted — and knows it, and figures the door has closed behind them — was that grace, mercy, and forgiveness are still on the table. The distance you wandered is not greater than the love that came looking.
