Courageous Men: Facing Challenges, Overcoming Adversity

“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13–14

The first Sunday of Men’s Month, and the message was about what it actually takes to stand as a man of God.

Not physical strength. Strength of character, of faith, of wisdom — and the sense to know where it comes from. Ephesians 6:10 says to be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might, not in your own. A man of God leads by depending on God, especially in the stretches where his own strength runs out.

The message turned to leadership. A leader leads from the front, by example, not from behind. When the sons of Zebedee came asking for position, Jesus turned it around on them — in the kingdom of God, the servant is the one who leads. Godly leadership serves with love and humility; it does not control.

And it closed where Joshua closed: a man decides who he will serve, and then he lives it in his home, his church, and his community. Galatians 6:9 — do not grow weary in well doing, for in due season you shall reap, if you faint not. The trials are not the end of the story. They are what makes the faith strong enough to carry.
